Foot Locker Coupon Code May 2013

Footwear has always been big business – after all, everyone slips on a pair of shoes at some time or another. And the need has never been more evident than in the sports, or rubber, shoes sector. What started out as rubber-soled canvass tops meant for wearing at the beach in the 1830’s have now morphed into the styrofoam-bottomed neoprene mesh uppers that the man-on-the-street uses today. From specialty to mainstream, sneakers have gone a long way.

Beginnings

When it acquired and operated the Kinney Shoe Company as a subsidiary in 1963, little did the F. W. Woodworth Company, a U.S. department-store chain operator, know that it would branch out into specialty shoe stores like Stylco in 1967, Susie Casuals in 1968, and Foot Locker in 1974. It rode the mall construction boom of the 1980’s, aggressively putting-up multiple specialty store outlets like Afterthoughts and Northern Reflections inside these shopping enclosures. It incorporated the Woolworth Corporation in 1988 as a separate entity to handle these specialty store businesses, including Foot Locker’s, later renaming it to the Woolworth Athletic Group after acquiring the Champs Sports. When the Woolworth’s Department Store business folded in 1997, the company focused to expand the athletic business instead, acquiring the U. S.’s largest athletic catalogue retailer Eastbay in 1997 and regional storefront retailers Koenig Sporting Goods, also in 1997, and The Athletic Fitters in 1998. By this year, the company renamed itself to the Venator Group, Inc.; with Foot Locker subsequently becoming its main dollar-earner, the company (again) renamed itself to Foot Locker, Inc. in 2001.
